If you are sick and going into hospital you should remember to let your Parish Priest know the name of the hospital and the date you are being admitted. If you can't do this yourself then please ask a relative or friend to do this on your behalf. Hospital chaplains and parish priests are no longer automatically informed about catholics that are in hospital so they will not know that you have been admitted unless you tell them. It is up to you to ensure that your hospital records state that you are a Catholic.
The Parish Priest will be able to advise if you should consider availing yourself of the sacrament of the sick prior to admission. Remember that the sacrament of the sick is for the living. It might be fitting to receive this prior to an operation and the Parish Priest can discuss when this would be appropriate. Contact the Parish Priest to find out more.

When being admitted to hospital you can ask that your religion be placed on your Personal File. In-patient's at Warwick Hospital are provided with a Chaplaincy Service. Elderly patients or those who have a serious illness are advised to carry an ID card that says I AM A CATHOLIC. In the event of an emergency hospital admission please notify a Catholic Priest.
A prayer for when visting a sick person: Lord Jesus, Lover of the sick. Be with (name) in his (her) sickness. Help him (her) to accept this illness as a share in your cross, and bring him (her) back to full health. Lord Jesus, we praise you, for you are Lord for ever and ever. Amen.
A prayer for before surgery: Loving Father, I entrust myself to your care this day; guide with wisdom and skill the minds and hands of the medical people who minister in your Name, and grant that every cause of illness be removed, I may be restored to soundness of health and learn to live in more perfect harmony with you and with those around me. Through Jesus Christ. Amen.
A prayer after surgery: Blessed Saviour, I thank you that this operation is safely past, and now I rest in your abiding presence, relaxing every tension, releasing every care and anxiety, receiving more and more of your healing life into every part of my being. In moments of pain I turn to you for strength, in times of loneliness I feel your loving nearness. Grant that your life and love and joy may flow through me for the healing of others in your name. Amen.
A prayer for Doctors and Nurses: O merciful Father, who have wonderfully fashioned man in your own image, and have made his body to be a temple of the Holy Spirit, sanctify, we pray, our doctors and nurses and all those whom you have called to study and practice the arts of healing the sick and the prevention of disease and pain. Strengthen them in body and soul, and bless their work, that they may give comfort to those for whose salvation your Son became Man, lived on this earth, healed the sick, and suffered and died on the Cross. Amen.
